Extracts from a letter From Nigel Howells the Chief Executive of Sevenoaks Council to the LGCE on 8 December 2000:

"Eynsford, Otford and Shoreham"

The Commission notes "that a merge would appear to reflect community identities reasonably" in this part of the District; the District Council
disagrees with this view. There is no doubting that Eynsford gravitates northwards to its near neighbour Farningham and, further afield, towards Swanley and Dartford. In contrast Otford, in particular, has close links with Sevenoaks, its near neighbour to the south.

One of the aims of the District Council in its deliberations was to avoid sprawling rural 3 member ward. Electors many miles apart from one
another would lose interest in local affairs that appear to them to be no longer local. Whilst the District Council still believes that its
proposals for this area, including the Crockenhill and Well Hill Ward, to be the best nonetheless it does suggest an amendment in order to improve the electoral equality which the Commission believes needs to be addressed. By further extending the newly created Parish Ward of Well Hill, the variance from the electoral quota for the District Council's proposed Otford and Shoreham Ward would be reduced to +8% (from 9%) and Crockenhill and Well Hill Ward would improve its variance from -5% to -2%. This, in the view of the District Council, is not an ideal solution but is a vastly better option than the very large 3 member rural ward recommended by the Commission.

There is local support for naming this new parish ward "The Well Hill Hundreds" and the District Council would wish the Commission to consider this."

The WHRA will continue to oppose the extending of the Well Hill Hundreds ward.

At least we have a good deal of support for our name of this ward.
